HANNSG, a brand belonging to Taiwan's HannStar Display Corporation, has today launched an entry-level 22in monitor with an entry-level price-tag of £109.99 including VAT.

If you're looking for a cheap-as-chips upgrade that provides an ample 1,680x1,050 resolution, this could be it. The display, model number HG221AP, provides a 1000:1 contrast ratio, a 5ms typical response time, a generous horizontal viewing angle of 170º, and a pair of built-in 1W speakers.

Its specification is nothing to write home about, and we'd be surprised if colours weren't washed out at 170º. Perhaps its biggest drawback, though, is the single VGA input. Nonetheless, at a touch over £100, it could be useful as an everyday solution for the no-frills user and it's simply one of the cheapest 22in screens we've seen so far.

Aesthetics aren't exactly tantalising, and the black-and-silver design looks a contender for ugliest display of the year.

The good news, however, is that the display is available exclusively from Misco.co.uk, who currently has it listed at an even sweeter £99.99. You could get a better-spec Samsung for say £30 more, but if budget matters most, they don't come much cheaper than this.

Official press release: HANNSG launch 22” monitor for a jaw dropping £109.99

Does anyone else remember that it was so common to get good CRT's for around the £40-£50 mark. £100 CRT was considered premium. I've rarely seen an LCD less than £80 and they tend to be pretty poor for gaming at least.
