Don't you just love sales figures? Apple certainly loves these
Figures revealed by market research firm, NPD, show that Apple's Leopard operating system, OS X 10.5, outsold its predecessor Tiger, OS X 10.4, by 20.5% in its first month. Taking into account only sales of standalone versions of the OS, NPD collaborated with 50 U.S. retailers such as Best Buy and Amazon to determine the figures.
Tiger, released in April 2005, had previously outsold all prior OS X versions. In first month sales compiled by NPD, Leopard has dealt Apple a handsome 32.8% increase in profit over Tiger.
Apple's Leopard and Microsoft's Vista have been key launches for both companies this year and both operating systems have often been subject to scrutiny for not living up to their billing. Despite the supposedly lacklustre launches, Microsoft's Vista sold 20 million copies in its first month - a feat that Microsoft was quick to point out, and now Apple is following suit with record breaking figures of its own.
Whilst Microsoft's operating system remains the giant with its huge market share, Apple will be pleased with the negative press surrounding Microsoft's Vista and the successful launch of its own Leopard as it continues to chisel away at Microsoft's dominance on the desktop.
