Most of us have become accustomed to using freeware software for our CD/DVD needs, be it via a solution built into an OS or a readily available alternative such as ImgBurn.

Catching on to the fact that nobody really wants to pay to carry out what are now relatively simple tasks, Nero has made available a freeware version of its Nero 9 CD/DVD authoring tool.

The software, available to download from Nero.com, promises to give users "the chance to enjoy Nero’s world-renowned data disc burning and copying features for an unlimited time, absolutely free". It'll allow users to carry out simple tasks such as basic data burning or disc copying, but additional functionality will only become available by upgrading to a full version of Nero 9.

Despite appearing to be a trimmed-down release, the freeware download weighs in at a fairly chunky 55MB. Users should also be aware that the software will prompt users to install the bundled Ask Toolbar during setup - you can, fortunately, opt out if you choose to do so.

Great news!
I think I'll stick with CDBurnerXP - free, lightweight and it works and all for a 3MB download. No bloatware for me :)
Great so it will burn a data cd or dvd. then you pay to upgrade to get the dvd video and music capability….

Sod that, I will stick with ImgBurn, InfraRecorder and CD Burner XP Pro, between all three I have the best of all worlds and not a penny spent :)
Isn't Nero Lite been out for a while now ?
That was the Linux version.
