We were fairly certain that HP had big plans for Palm's webOS beyond using it in smartphones, but with no firm announcements it wasn't very clear what those plans were. Now, thanks to a carrier training site, we may have a better idea of exactly what the world's biggest PC manufacturer has in store.

The site - webOS central - is designed to give sales reps and other personnel a better idea of what the platform is all about, but also drops a few hints as to where it might be going. The short intro video envisions a future where phones, slates and netbooks all run on the OS and seamlessly share information between themselves.

Obviously the operating system originated on phones, and some major hints have been dropped suggesting that tablets will be arriving this quarter. However, this is the first time that netbooks have been mentioned in the same breath.

And when will this mythical future of interoperable devices arrive? According to the video it'll be 'soon enough', but some think it could only be a matter of weeks. HP is scheduled to host a mysterious webOS-focussed press event on February 9 which invites us to 'think big, think small, think beyond'. What exactly this means, though, remains unclear.

Could a whole family of webOS powered devices be just around the corner? It's certainly possible, but we'll only have to wait a few more weeks to find out for certain.
