Last Thursday Apple technicians noticed an intruder had managed to gain access to the website portal for registered developers. While "sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed" the company states that it is possible that "developers’ names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed". The issue was spotted on Thursday and despite teams "working around the clock" at Apple, it is yet to be resolved at the time of writing.
For the last three days the Apple Developer Site has been down with only a brief notice in place, as embedded above. Putting the blame for the inconvenience down to "maintenance is taking longer than expected". At the time of writing, the Apple Developer home page appears to be up, with information and resources etc, however if you head for the Member Centre you will notice that this important developer part of the site is still unavailable.
Apple says it published the notice, embedded directly above, "in the spirit of transparency". Another opinion of the updated information from Apple comes from GigaOM which reports that "it took some public hue-and-cry from the Apple blogging community and top developers before the Cupertino, Calif.-based company shared the reasons why the website continues to remain offline". Developers were sent an email, containing pretty much the same content as the updated notice, above, on Sunday.
MacWorld has got a little bit more information from Apple in the last few hours, about the extent of the breach. Apple reassured the Mac-orientated magazine that the attacker "did not have access to app code, or the servers where app information is stored".
