Taiwanese memory specialist Apacer has launched an eye-catching new high-performance SSD. With the commoditisation of memory products brands seek to differentiate using various design and marketing techniques. In PCs we have seen peripherals and components brands adding RGB LEDs all over the place, as well as robot armour style heatsinks, but another theme seen from time to time is of designs paying homage to firearms (see Gigabyte G1-Killer Assassin, and Assassin 2) and military themes.

Apacer follows in Gigabyte's gun homage footsteps with its new PT920 Commando PCIe NVMe SSD (if asked to login, press cancel three times). Available in 240GB / 480GB configurations this PCI Express 3.0 x4 card's design is "inspired by an assault rifle… with details like sight aperture and ejection port". Unfortunately, as observed amongst the first internet forum comments, it looks more like a heavy duty stapler installed on your motherboard than part of a disassembled M16 assault rifle.

The key Apacer Commando PT920 SSD specification highlights are as follows:

  • Compliant with NVMe 1.2 Standard
  • Sequential Read Speed Up to 2500MB/s
  • Sequential Write Speed Up to 1350MB/s (480GB)
  • Random 4K write of 175,000 IOPs (480GB)
  • Built-in Global Wear Levelling & End-to-End Data Protection
  • ECC Engine Correcting Up to 120bit/2KB
  • Smart ECC & SmartRefresh for maintaining accuracy and safety of data access
  • Supports S.M.A.R.T. Command
  • 3 year warranty

You can check through the full tech specs here, where it reveals this add-in-board measures 160 x 120 x 22mm, as well as all the differences in performance between the 240GB / 480GB models.

Pricing and availability aren't provided by Apacer.

Reminds me of the time some company tried to market a Battle Bowler… literally a plastic army helmet with built-in headphones, for that all-immersive authentic experience when playing Call-of-Honour/Medal-of-Duty games…

Why don't they put something properly cool on these things, like a lightsaber or a sonic screwdriver?

I bet it doesn't even have RGB!!
Who is the intended audience?

Who is the intended audience?

People with more money than sense.
Maybe it' me but that doesn't look particularly good for heat dissipation.
And it does look like a stapler to me.
Stapler or door lock….
