Looking to land in stores towards the end of April, Super Talent has released details of its upcoming RAIDDrive UpStream PCIe SSD.

The new card features a Sandforce controller and is capable of producing read speeds of up to 1GB/s and write speeds of up to 900MB/s. Unlike other members of the RAIDDrive family, the technology relies on four RAID drives in RAID 0, 1 or 1E to achieve its performance, avoiding a RAID 5 offering, thus removing the need for costly and volatile cache memory.

With its potentially cheaper configuration, Super Talent marketing director, Peter Carcione, states that the UpStream will be an "upsetter" in the market. Typically PCIe SSD offerings involving RAID come at an increased cost as they involve cache memory or at the very least, multiple controllers; we wonder at exactly what price-point the RAIDDrive UpStream will land at.

Further details and benchmarks can be found here.

A PCI SSD at consumer (rather than enterprise) price point would certainly get my vote.
I just don't see the point. You'd need to be doing some serious work on your home computer to need one of these, like editing multiple massive or raw encoded video streams.

But what do I know, I still use a SATAII SSD and don't plan to upgrade in the next century :P

Yes, and 640kb is more than enough for anyone.

At these sort of speeds access is going to be pretty much immediate, certainly much closer to RAM than disk I would suspect. No loading times for games etc….
Bleh, rather build my own RAID…….and still awaiting the day I can get 2TB of SSD for a few hundred quid…….

I can dream of my VMs being like greased lightening!

I do keep wondering how much prices are being held artificially high. If the industry has the capability to compete with Magnetic Disks it should, as there's a strong chance it'll wipe them mostly off the map for the consumer segment.
