Samsung has announced a new portable SSD based storage device called the Samsung Portable SSD T3. This palm-sized SSD will be available in capacities up to 2TB and offer performance as much as 4x faster than a standard external 500GB HDD. The Samsung Portable SSD T3 is currently on show at Samsung's CES 2016 booth.

The Samsung Portable SSD T3 contains an SSD which uses Samsung's Vertical NAND (V-NAND) and SSD TurboWrite technology. It pairs this fast storage with a USB 3.1 interface (with Type-C connector) to provide write speeds of up to 450MB/s. Samsung thinks that the drive, developed following feedback on its Portable SSD T1 design, will be particularly appealing to content creators, business and IT professionals. As with any fast new storage device launched recently, Samsung inserts reference to 'rich 4K content' portability.

This is indeed a highly portable drive. If you've watched the video above, and got a bit annoyed at the imperial units, please check the spec list below which gives you metric dimensions and weight. Complementing its portability, Samsung has made this palm-sized storage device pretty robust, as you can see it was dropped from a height of 2m without a problem. 1500G of shock resistance comes from a combination of the metal case, internal frame structure and solid state non-moving components. For extra durability Samsung has integrated Thermal Guard. The drive is backed by a three year warranty.

Highly portable items are not just more likely to be dropped, they are also easier to misplace or get misappropriated. With this risk in mind Samsung has equipped the SSD T3 with AES 256-bit hardware encryption. For use across your devices Samsung says the drive is exFAT formatted and should happily converse with your Android smartphone/tablet, SmartTV, desktop or laptop (Mac or Windows) and more.

Samsung Portable SSD T3 drives will begin to become available in February in Europe, Korea, the US and China before going worldwide. Pricing for the range of capacities  available is yet to be revealed.

Still way too expensive. At least it will serve to drive prices down.
The only use for external ssds that I can think of is corporate espionage lol. Do people really need super fast 2tb external ssds?
