Another area of TV ripe for innovation, according to Bell, is the electronic programme guide which, as a format, has been around for about 50 years' and which is provided to help channel surfers pick a programme to watch out of the thousands available.

Bell told HEXUS that electronic programme guides, in their current state, were "on the threshold of their usefulness," and said Intel was looking into ways to improve them, without making them too complicated.

Bell said it was absolutely crucial that any attempts to add Internet functionality to TVs needed to be simple and not interfere with the experiences and behavior patterns viewers enjoy.

People, said Bell, tended to have a very strong bond to the big box in the living room and wouldn't, for example, be happy about substituting a conventional remote control for a keyboard, or having a web browser open up in the middle of a show.

Still, she said, Intel remained "hugely committed" to the idea of revamping the television and finding a use for it "all over the world."
