Birmingham-based studio lives on
We reported at the beginning of April that SEGA's racing studio had closed its doors, making a sequel to its SEGA Rally franchise highly improbable. However, Develop magazine is now reporting that Codemasters, developer of the Colin McRae franchise, has swooped in to pick up the pieces.Codemaster's CEO Rod Cousens has suggested that they may take on the SEGA Rally franchise and adopt it to their own needs. "In seizing this opportunity, we have created additional resources to escalate our plans in the racing segment," he told the mag.
It's good news for British industry as it means that many of the developers who worked in SEGA's Birmingham-based studio will no longer lose their jobs.
“We hope to welcome more than 40 people to the company and we have enjoyed the full co-operation of our friends at Sega in making this happen. It is good business for Codemasters, an exciting prospect and there will be more to come as we are not content to stand still."
