Dead Island developer, Techland, has confirmed that it has released an “incorrect” version of its zombie-infused action adventure on the digital download platform Steam.

The error apparently only applies to North American users, who got early access to the game on the 6th September. Problems with the EU version are expected to be ironed out ahead of its official release on 9th September.

Techland has released the following statement:

"We deeply regret that an incorrect version of Dead Island was inadvertently made available to players on Steam launch in North America. We are very sorry for any issues you may have experienced while playing the game - the correct, patched version will be made available to North American players ASAP."

Some players are also reporting, via the Steam forums , that the same applies to the PC boxed version of the game. Some users believe that Techland had accidentally released an early dev/beta build of the game, which featured control problems and clipping issues.

It's great that it's all going to be fixed so quickly, but how on earth do you release the wrong build? Techland must be mightily embarrassed today.

So far, Dead Island has received mixed reviews, with Edge rating it 3/10 - and at the other end of the spectrum, Game Informer awarding it 85%.

Update: The patch is available for North American gamers.

Might be worth checking the stories first before you post them xD The news is a tad out dated now and the patch went live on the launch of the game yesterday for the states and part of Europe. When we get it on Friday in the UK patch will already be live.

However as the patch was rushed, they are claiming that the patch may destroy game saves atm so they are working on another patch.

Isn't that what Hexus say?:

It states that a patch will be released ASAP but the patch is already out there but it breaks saves xD

However you do have to wonder how an incorrect version made it to gold/steam/pressing. If the second patch isn't out by Friday it looks as if we will get the patch that could potentially break game saves.
Presumably only breaks saves because the dev version saves aren't meant for retail ;)

If true though, quite a cock up. Probably easy to do (and I've seen it before in indie game development), but you'd have thought they would have a decent checking system.

Yeah indie games, quite expectable with a team of a handful, but a studio with quite a substantial amount of staff and the serious amount of hype behind it, it's a bit of a gaff to release what I can only imagine is a review build or a very late beta?
