Warner Bros have announced and published a trailer for a new version of the 1985 coin-op video gaming classic Gauntlet, coming to PCs this summer. The game follows the same top-down frantic team combat style but with massively updated visuals and in gameplay promises a "fresh, yet true to the original, take on a multiplayer masterpiece". German company Arrowhead Studios, best known for Magicka, are behind the new game which has a full title of Gauntlet: Invade the Darkness.

The new Gauntlet game will feature "more immediate arcade action, class combos, and procedural dungeons," we are told. Gameplay will include one to four player co-op with online gameplay. The studio describes the reimagination as "completely modernised action RPG version of the celebrated dungeon crawler". Just like the innovative original game the four distinct character classes Warrior, Valkyrie, Elf or Wizard, all have their strengths and weaknesses in the game.

This is the first title in the newly announced WB Games Vault series. Warner Brothers own a range of old Atari/Midway games through acquisitions from studios that went to the wall. Gamers can expect to see similar remakes and rehashes including the likes of Spy Hunter, Joust, Defender, Tapper, Paperboy, Rampage, and Robotron.

Gauntlet: Invade the Darkness will be available this summer via Steam for PCs. It is also said to be being made available for SteamOS / Steam Machines.

I watched the trailer for this a couple of days ago…..

I must say, the nostalgia grabbed me for a moment and then I looked at the gameplay…..which is pretty much the same as the ancient original :(
I didn't mind the original, always enjoyed it down the arcade. Will definitely look into this one, will depend on the pricing.

Seems to be thing lately with older games coming back, the original Battle Chess has just popped up with re-vamped graphics on Steam I saw yesterday.

Oh, that is interesting, although the star wars version was the one that always grabbed me.

And that's a bad thing how? This is exactly what Gauntlet should be. Legends/Dark Legacy did a good job of keeping the original feel, Seven Sorrows let the series down badly and it's nice to see a new version coming out and getting back to basics. I can see several copies being purchased for my household :D
Oooooooooh happy days!
