Netflix has rolled out a diskless application for Sony's PlayStation 3 console, but so far it looks like it's only for customers in the US.
The service could spell the end of people waiting for disks in the post and let users get films direct to their TV via their games console.
The rental service has partnered with Dolby to offer users films in 1080p with 5.1 sound for TV shows and films streamed over the web. The PS3 is the first consumer device to get the audio boost from 18 October, but Netflix said more devices will be added over time to support streaming digital surround sound.
Greg Peters VP of product development at Netflix, said: "Netflix required an audio solution that could efficiently deliver an outstanding surround sound experience for a wide range of consumer devices. Dolby Digital Plus proved to be the best solution to meet our needs and the needs of our device partners."
