Price cut, internal storage and further innovation discussed at Nintendo's end of year meeting.
Speaking at a Q&A session at Nintendo's financial year briefing last week, President Satoru Iwata responded to the issue of lack of internal storage for Wii by confirming that the company is looking at a solution.Currently SD cards are used to boost the Wii's measly 512 MB Internal flash memory, but with the range of downloadable games for the Virtual Console growing by the week, the lack of storage has been an issue for some gamers.
"Statistically speaking, it is true that there are a small number of customers who feel that the flash memory is too small, while many others find that they have plenty of memory" adding, "However, because this small number of people are none other than the most avid players, we know we have to review the best possible solution to eliminate their inconvenience," said Iwata.
Iwata also commented on speculation that a price cut for the console may be imminent, but dismissed the idea stating that a reduction in price is not in the forecast for the next fiscal year.
" I believe that something must be wrong if we conduct our business with the premise that we will need to cut prices of our hardware as time goes on," he concluded.
He does believe however that the company need to 'up its game' if its going to keep interest in the console high. Last week, Iwata expressed worries that the Wii may have peaked too soon and said that the company is looking at more ways to surprise its consumers.
"We were not able to complete the necessary coordination with our partners in time to prepare a detailed plan to be shared today. However, it is true that we are making progress, and we think that we will be able to start several experiments in the near future."
Iwata teased with his final word on the matter. "Of course, there are technologies and rights that we are paying special attention to, but we cannot disclose them."
Exactly which new innovations Nintendo has up its sleeve we don't know, but we can't wait to find out.
