Why won't you be able to buy a second GamePad at Wii U launch?

Nintendo has revealed that, quite simply, there wont be any games supporting dual GamePads at launch. The firm went on to clarify that originally, the Wii U had been intended as a one pad system, however, following consumer feedback, the firm made a last minute change to the hardware to support two devices.

This switch-around, rather unsurprisingly, caught-out developers, with firms either deciding to integrate the feature last-minute, leading to delays, or, in-order to meet deadlines continue to work towards a single GamePad configuration. What we don't know yet is exactly when the first dual GamePad game is to be released. Until then, if you break your one and only GamePad, it appears as though a quick trip to the store is out of the question, with Nintendo Spares likely the first port of contact.

A quick trip to the store was probably out of the question anyway given they're going to cost ~£100.
So am I missing something or is the Wii U not going to be the fun party machine that the Wii was? :oS

My Wii only really tends to get used when I have friends round after a couple of drinks and spend hours mucking around on Wii Sports!

You can use the “pro controller” and old Wii accessories for games that support them, but no games at launch will support more than one of the ‘tablet-controllers’ - so you won't need another one - that's why they're won't be any to buy.

As per my first post, i think the fact it costs ~£100 for a controller is a bigger barrier for most people.
Yeah it does make it quite an expensive proposition, once the initial rush dies off after a few months I suspect prices will drop a bit or they'll start doing deals with a reduced price second controller. I guess it depends on how desperate you are for it as soon after launch, will be an interesting one to watch :)
Time to sell my Wii at Xmas - bet it will take ages to sell :(
