Time to get paranoid?
Expect to see a lot more stories like this one. Google's smartphone operating system seems to have entered an exponential phase in its growth as its profile grows and more handset makers sign-up.
An interesting piece of research comes from mobile content site Myxer, which has launched a monthly report on what its 30 million users are up to. Last year visits to Myxer's mobile site from Android users grew by 350 percent - double the 170 percent growth it registered from iPhone users.
This is to be expected, to some extent, because Android is at an earlier stage in its development than the iPhone, but it's remarkable growth nonetheless. Furthermore, Myxer delivered seven times more downloads to Android devices than iPhone devices in Q4 2009, which indicates the trend is accelerating.
Having said that, both OSs are still trailing way behind BlackBerry. "While we've seen the Android OS emerge as a serious competitor in the operating system landscape, RIM's operating system still dominates the smartphone market on Myxer's mobile site, growing from 51% in 2008 to a massive 67% in 2009," said Myk Willis, CEO of Myxer.
