AMD has introduced its highly anticipated dual-GPU graphics card. The Radeon Pro Duo has been launched at GDC 2016, at AMD's Capsaicin event today. We knew this dual Fiji card was on the way; the backstory is that it was delayed as AMD waited for the nascent HMD market to bloom. The name may be a bit of a surprise, many market watchers were expecting a Fury X2, but it makes sense in terms of where AMD is positioning the new graphics card as the "World's First Platform for VR Content Creation and Consumption". The AMD Radeon Pro Duo is the initial product of the AMD VR Ready Creator line.
"More powerful computing platforms are rapidly leading to greater immersive experiences," said Raja Koduri, senior vice president and chief architect, Radeon Technologies Group, AMD. "This is most evident with VR which demands ever higher compute performance with rock solid consistency. Our new AMD Radeon Pro Duo with our LiquidVR SDK is the world’s fastest platform for both content creation and consumption, enabling a world class graphics and VR experience."
The Radeon Pro Duo with LiquidVR SDK is described by AMD as a platform aimed at most all aspects of VR content creation, "from entertainment to education, journalism, medicine and cinema". Of course, as well as developing content and "killer VR experiences", it is a great platform for playing the latest DirectX 12 experiences, at maximum fidelity, in your leisure time.
This graphics card offers 16 teraflops of compute performance, says AMD. Complementing the hardware AMD's software developers promise LiquidVR can reduce latency and has been selected as the platform of choice by partners such as Crytek. There are plenty of other heavyweights backing AMD's VR creation initiative as you can see from the slide above.
AMD's Radeon Pro Duo is planned for availability in early Q2 2016 at an anticipated price of US $1,499.
