As we edge closer to the official release of Windows 10 this summer we have started to hear about what will come in its wake. According to reports on ZDNet and Neowin Windows 10 'Threshold' will be updated in autumn. However next year we will get Windows 'Redstone' update(s) which will include at least one large update to provide support for new classes of devices that aren't already part of Windows 10. Expanded functionality is also expected alongside the usual minor updates and patches through the months.

Mary Jo Foley wrote on ZDNet to explain that in following its current plan Microsoft must follow a similar summer/autumn release schedule for major updates to Windows next year. Redstone is the codename for the updates to Windows next year but it will not end up as Windows 11 (or 12) she asserts. So we could be looking at something like Windows 10.1 perhaps. Redstone will be delivered through Windows Update but be larger than a typical update as it includes new features and new device support. It will come in two waves, in June and October next year, according to an updated Neowin report.

If you are a Windows Insider now you will be able to continue after the Windows 10 official release and through Redstone updates says Foley. With this news the Insider program looks like it might run for a long time…

The 'Redstone' codename is derived from Minecraft, which Microsoft acquired last year when it bought publisher and developer Mojang. In the game Redstone is used to build new technologies. The previous 'Threshold' codename was derived from the Halo series of games.
