A solid foundation for a promising franchise

Following the creation of the Iron Man armour, the movie provides little else. The revelation of the bad guy, Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges), comes as no surprise. There is, after all, only one character with a bald head and a full beard.

Iron Man's action sequences, it should be noted, are superbly well done. You'll have trouble distinguishing exactly which scenes are CGI and which aren't, it really does look that good. The trouble is, there aren't quite enough action sequences on the whole, and though the majority of them are highly entertaining, none of them are truly memorable.

As with most CGI-based action scenes, it all seems a touch too hurried. There are sparks of excitement, but never is there a crescendo of action leading up to a nail-biting finale. That, perhaps, has been set aside for the already-announced Iron Man 2.

Despite its faults, Iron Man is a thoroughly enjoyable superhero action-ride, and lays solid foundations for the franchise. Whilst many superhero flicks attempt to be deeper, more serious affairs, they often fail. Iron Man on the other hand attempts to be a joyride from start to finish, and succeeds. It's a solid start to our summer of superheroes, and we've still got The Hulk and Batman to come.

Tip: Fans of the Marvel universe will want to stay behind after the movie's credits for a little teaser of what's to come.

saw it, liked it, done.
I saw it last night and thought it was the best super-hero film i`ve ever seen.

Robert Downey Jr was spot on as tony stark and CG was brilliant.

Bring on iron man 2 :D
Good review and I have to say I agree with it. I felt Iron Man was good but it could've been great. :)
For those who didn't stay after the credits, here's a low-quality capture of the scene: YouTube - ironman ending - be warned, it could be seen as a spoiler if you've not yet seen the movie.
saw it, liked it, but wasn't blown away. there was too much building a suit and too little action sequences for my liking. I think they should have cut 10-15 mins off the movie and made it a tighter experience. I'll watch iron man 2, but won't be excited about it beforehand…

..cool suit though…
