According to eagle-eyed journalists at the Games Convention in Liepzig last week, Nintendo will be releasing an official MP3 player for the DS on October 8th.

Plenty of gamers already have 3rd party MP3 players that they use with the DS but have complained about sound quality. Nintendo's official MP3 player apparently has a dedicated headphone jack and it's own sound processing chip so the quality should be superb.

Gizmondo have a photo of the packaging and have kindly translated the German text into English.

# For Nintendo DS (to be inserted into slot 2) and Game Boy Advance hardware
# To store music you need SD cards. Up to 2 GB cards are supported, this equals to 500 songs (best sound quality)
# Choose between different skins (including one with Mario)
# The interface shows all important information
# The unit itself features another headphone port

It appears that there will be no video capabilities but gamers should be able to use the touch-screen to access the MP3 player's functions. The price appears to be 29.99 euros. There should be an official announcement soon.

good idea to keep the cost as minimal as possible. Lots of people own SD cards already, and if they can utilise them for storing music, even better. It would be nice for Nintendo to now integrate the mp3 player into games, like the Xbox, so you can listen to your own music whilst playing:)
Bleh. I think the DS (even the lite) is a bit too big for an MP3 player.
if it does mpeg4 playback like the Japan only ‘Play Yan’ media player, then I'd be interested.
The only reason I didn't import the Play Yan was because the media encoding software was japanese language only :/
The “source” link says Gizmondo instead of Gizmodo. I know about three people were sad about it's death, but you have to move on :D :D
There is already a homebrew media player for the DS called Moonshell. And very good it is too.

However, this will be good for those people not into the homebrew scene.
