Crackdown on crack?

Electronic Arts has released the first screenshots for Mirror's Edge, an action adventure game currently in development by their DICE studio in Stockholm.

There are still very few details on the title but, in typical EA fashion, we've been assured that it will revolutionise the action adventure genre.

Patrick Soderlund, General Manager of EA DICE, commented: “We are a studio that believes in taking risks and taking games in new directions. We made the sandbox experience viable and enjoyable in Battlefield and now, we are looking to do something radical with the traditional established mechanics of first person movement.”

Senior producer, Owen O’Brien, commented: “We want to change the way that players are able to move in first person. No more restrictions, no more being blocked by simple barriers such as walls and fences. We want to enable the player to move like a real person, with the ability to run, jump, vault and slide in a way that has never been seen before in a first person game."

Judging by the screenshots and the information gathered thus far, Mirror's Edge has hints of Crackdown about it, with a free-roaming urban environment and the scope to be able to use a variety of parkour moves to navigate the street furniture.

Early reports say that the city will be inhabited by an authoritarian government regime who monitor its citizens with intense surveillance. We'll take the role of a courier who needs to dash across the city delivering information to contacts.

It certainly sounds like a game to keep our eyes on in 2008. Check out these screenshots:
