Valve's futuristic first person puzzle game, Portal has held off opposition from the likes of Bioshock, Call of Duty 4 and Super Mario Galaxy to scoop the top honours at the Game Developer's Choice Awards.

Portal was initially released on the PC and then subsequently as part of 'The Orange Box' package on the PS3 and Xbox 360. The game also picked up awards for best game design and innovation.

Bioshock scooped a handful of awards on night for best audio, best visual arts, and best writing and other notable winners included: best debut game, taken by Crackdown, best downloadable game awarded to the PS3's Flow, best technology for Crysis, and best handheld game went to Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

Bah, Super Mario Galaxy deserved to win something.
